Nobility
The size of peerage within the nobility increased during Henry VIII’s reign but had a very minimal increase due to offset by death and attainders.
- Increased during Henry’s reign although there was only an increase of nine.
- Many had achieved nobility due to successful royal service, i.e., courtiers, soldiers.
- The creation of new nobility was largely offset due to death and the number of attainders (status temporarily taken away).
Dukes
- Henry only promoted two non-royal ducal titles (Norfolk & Suffolk).
- Prior to Henry VIII’s throne, there was only one duke.
